Outdoor furniture, built to stay out in the weather

Outdoor furniture lives through sun, rain, pool water and, on a coast, salt in the air. Dedon, a German company that makes its own fiber in northern Germany and weaves it by hand on Cebu Island in the Philippines, sells furniture that you can leave out through the year. Whether a sofa lasts depends on four parts, and you can check each one before you buy.

The strand

The woven surface takes the most weather. Dedon researches and makes Dedon Fiber at its own plant, and the company engineers it to resist chlorine, salt water and sun. That is the reason you see Dedon pieces on pool decks, in desert gardens and on the decks of yachts.

For Paros, Dedon fiber specialists and Massaud worked out a new strand. It has an organic texture and feels close to a vine in the hand. The whole collection comes in one color, Silt, a warm matte brown that sits well next to stone, wood and planting.

The frame

A frame has to carry weight for years without rot or rust. Dedon uses two routes.

Dedon Sealine stands on handcrafted teak. Teak holds natural oils and tannins that help it cope with rain, strong sun, frost and swings in temperature. Left untreated, it weathers from gold to silver-gray. Weavers make the back of the sofa from an extra-wide strand of Dedon Fiber in titan or silver beige. See the Sealine collection.

Dedon Paros puts the weave on show across the arms and the back. Massaud kept the volumes low and horizontal, so the sofa seems to hover above the ground and leaves the view past it open. The arms and backrests are wide enough to sit on. See the Paros collection.

The feet

Feet decide where a sofa can stand. Paros rests on large circular feet in stainless steel, so you can set it on grass or bare soil as well as on a deck. A narrow leg sinks into a lawn, and a wide disc spreads the load.

Sealine has teak under it and suits a deck, a stone terrace or a covered patio. Massaud designed it for any season and climate, from a lodge terrace in hot sun to a boat deck in a northern fjord.

The cushions

Cushions carry the comfort and need the most care. Both collections take seat and back cushions from the Dedon fabric families, among them Natura, Caleo, Tucson, Gaia, Muse, Nube and Borneo. Store them dry during long wet spells and in winter, and the woven frames can stay where they stand.

Two sofas, two systems

Both collections work as systems. Paros offers a 2-seater, a 3-seater, left and right modules and left and right corner modules, plus a beach chair for the pool. Sealine has a 2-seater and a 3-seater, left, right and XL modules, daybeds that end left or right, a bench, and three coffee tables at 90x90, 162x65 and 174x69 cm.

You can start with one sofa and add modules later. Ask us to confirm the current colors before you add pieces to a set you already own.

Care in two lines

Clean the weave with a soft brush, warm water and a mild cleanser, and keep alcohol and solvents off it. If you want Sealine's teak to keep its golden tone, clean it once or twice a year and apply Dedon Teak Color Protector at least twice a year.
