Dining room sets, from the kitchen to the terrace

Dining room sets live under a roof, on a rug, far from rain. Dedon, the German company that weaves outdoor furniture by hand on Cebu Island, makes two small dining families that suit the space between a kitchen and a terrace. GamFratesi designed Mymi to cross the window line, and Samuel Wilkinson drew Fllair for a table by the sea.

A chair for both sides of the glass

A kitchen nook and a balcony ask for the same thing: a chair that fits a small table and looks at home. If the chair can move between them, you buy one set for the whole year.

Dedon Mymi comes from Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi, the duo behind GamFratesi. Their first project with Dedon was Aiir, a light, see-through chair. They came back years later knowing Dedon's fiber and craft well and used that knowledge on Mymi.

The starting point was the cafes of Paris, where small tables and mixed seating let people talk in a group or sit alone for a while. Mymi pairs an armchair with a bistro table at cafe scale, and Dedon designed the set to move from a casual corner to a more formal dinner. The designers wanted a chair that crosses the window line, so Mymi works in a dining room as well as on a terrace. See the Mymi collection.

Colors for a room and a garden

Mymi comes in four colorways: myroca, mymara, mytessa and myemba. For a seat cushion you pick from Dedon fabric families such as Natura, Caleo, Tucson, Gaia, Muse, Nube and Borneo. Choose the colorway against your kitchen floor first, since the chairs will spend the winter there.

Fllair: a small table with a view

Dedon Fllair is Samuel Wilkinson's first collection for Dedon. He found his starting point in Fiskardo, a fishing town at the northern tip of the Greek island of Kefalonia, where summer days go to watching sailboats in the port. The soft, sculpted curves come from the rocky shore.

Fllair has one armchair and one round dining table, both wrapped in a braided weave. The armchair looks solid, and the flare at its edges holds your body the way a pocket in the rock would. You can add seat and back cushions. The weave comes in three shades, and Dedon lists Sahara and Mahagony among them. See the Fllair collection.

Sizing a small set

A round table suits a corner or an alcove, because it has no sharp ends to bump. Two chairs make a coffee spot on a balcony. Four chairs around a round table need about three feet behind each seat so a guest can push back and stand.

Moving chairs with the seasons

A set that crosses the window line needs a plan for the move. Keep felt pads for the indoor floor and take them off before the chairs go back out. Bring the cushions in first, since fabric suffers more from a wet spring than the frame does. Fllair stays outside through the year, so you only move its cushions.

Care, inside and out

Clean the weave with a soft cloth or brush, warm water and a mild cleanser. Put coasters under glasses and wipe off wine, citrus juice and soda at once. Keep alcohol and solvents away from the surface, since they can mark or discolor it. Store outdoor cushions dry in the wet months.
